ACC Top Groups 1990-99  [Start][Women][Men1][Men2]

1. Brooks & Dunn

Bob Kingsley (1997):  They're not only the most awarded duo in country history, they're also the best selling. In fact, they're second only to Simon & Carfunkel as salesleaders in any musical format. -- Kicks Brooks and Ronny Dunn jokingly refer to themselves as "hillbillies with attitude", and Ronny tributes much of their success to the fact that they're also good friends. He says: "We don't go seperate ways when the bus stops, the phones ring, we work on ideas -  it's a lot like a marriage. But, I don't think I'd marry a man that looks like him."

    2. Alabama

Bob Kingsley (1995):  You know, it's hard to imaging now, but prior to the 1980's there were no superstar bands in country music. Individual singers or bandleaders were the stars. But this next group changed that forever with a series of 32 number-one-singles and a 15-year-string of gold and platinum albums. Today after all those years in the major leagues, the band continues to have one of the freshest, most melodic sounds imaginable. At number 75 for the year, here's Alabama.

Bob Kingsley (1997): Up now a spring-time hit by a band that first hit billboard's country chart in 1984 and their lead singer has this explanation for the groups long genius: He said, the secret of our success is that we have never quit caring. We've never been complacent about our music or opposition within country music. We always felt that we had more to achieve. That keeps you hungry and that is at the heart why we are still here.

    5. Shenandoah

Bob Kingsley (1989): This group had a recording contract before they had a name. These guys have been playing for several years around mustle shows in Alabama, doing sessions for their Artists and knocking around the local clubs. Then Columbia Records came calling. They got themselves all set to make an album and they needed to come up with a catchy name. They couldn't name themselves after their home state of Alabama, since an other group had beaten them to it. So, the record company offered them two choices: "The Rythmwriters" abd "Shenandoah". Guess which one they chose .....

    8. Little Texas

Bob Kingsley (1994): Up now a number one hit from last spring by an act that pretty much represents the essence of 90th country music: Youth, good looks, wide musical interests, top musicianship, high energy and style.
